ONE THING YOU SHOULD NEVER FORGET TO WEAR EVERYDAY AS AN ADULT
As you grow older, you get to be more conscious of how you look and present yourself to the world. I will not judge you. As a matter of fact, I congratulate you.
Great Job! The road to holistic development is coming to reality in your life.
With that said, there is one thing - I believe, every adult should never forget to wear.
That is Self-Compassion.
Compassion is the ability to show empathy, love, and concern for people who are in difficulty.
Self-compassion is simply the ability to direct these same emotions within and accept oneself, particularly in the face of failure.
Many of us think we need to be hard on ourselves to achieve our goals and succeed, we need to be tough bosses or hard on our kids through tough love. Well, that couldn’t be farther from the truth.
Sometimes this is done out of fear of engaging in self-indulgence or self-pity. Still, an inability to accept areas of weakness may lead to difficulty achieving emotional well-being.
Our thoughts create emotions and, ultimately, our reality.
Your brain is like a computer, it will follow your input. It will process that information as something you want it to focus on.
So, if you spend most of your time thinking negative thoughts. “I’m not good enough”, “this is too hard”, “I can’t do this”, “I don’t have enough time”, “I hate my boss”, “So and so is an ass” your brain will work towards manifesting more of that in your life. In other words, “the more you complain, the more you will have to complain about”.
So do yourself a favor and start the practice of Self-Compassion and see how your life will change.
Three Essential Pieces of Self Compassion
1. Be kind to yourself
2. Having a Sense of Common Humanity
3. Mindfulness
5 Mindfulness Practices for Self Compassion
1. Hugs – release Oxytocin in your brain
Try it now, just give yourself a big hug and say to yourself “I love you and thank you for supporting me.”
2. Talk to yourself as you would a child or friend.
Instead of beating ourselves up when we are having trouble or we make a mistake, console yourself and say to yourself as you would a child,
“It’s okay, don't worry, everything is going to be okay” or “I’m so sorry you hurt yourself”
3. Say NO when you need time for yourself
This is something we all need to do more. Warren Buffet has a famous quote about saying NO.
“The difference between successful people and very successful people is that very successful people say ‘no’ to almost everything.” 3
4. Create a DONE List. Focus on your accomplishments
We all focus so much energy on our todo list and when we don't complete it, we focus on what we didn't do instead of celebrating what we did do. When you celebrate what you accomplished, you feel good about yourself.
5. Connect with people who make you feel good
Choose your circle. Don’t spend all your life pleasing people who don’t appreciate you. It’s not that you gave up on those people or you don’t love them anymore. Think of it as a way to give yourself a healthy environment, to create space for forgiveness and grace for those who don’t.
Picking your circle is not a selfish act, rather it is allowing yourself to grow up with people who make you feel good about yourself.
Start Unwearing the Past and Dreaming of a Brighter Future
Living in your past regrets and pains will not help you. Forgive yourself, be kind to yourself.
Though there is a line between giving yourself compassion and giving up on improving oneself, on the journey you are taking, it matters that you love whom you are becoming.
Accepting yourself is a life-long journey, but don’t allow any past baggage to stop you from getting a better tomorrow.
So wear self-compassion. Being tough on yourself will only harm you more.
